WCAS Scores Transcript 00:00 [Music] 00:09 in the spring of 2018 all students in 00:13 grades 5 8 and 11 took the Washington 00:16 comprehensive assessment of science or 00:18 the walk s some people were concerned 00:21 that student performance would drop it 00:24 is important to remember that this new 00:26 test is based on new standards the next 00:29 generation science standards it is not 00:32 comparable to the MSP and science or the 00:35 end-of-course exam in biology these 00:37 scores are a new baseline you could 00:40 think of it this way let's imagine 00:42 climbing to mountains Glacier Peak which 00:45 has an elevation of 10,500 and 41 feet 00:49 and the taller Mount Rainier which has 00:52 an elevation of 14,000 411 feet some 00:56 people could hike Glacier Peak without 00:58 any problems but they might find Mount 01:01 Rainier to be much more challenging it 01:04 is a higher standard some people could 01:06 come close but not reach the summit 01:08 their skills have not diminished but the 01:11 standard is higher and so they may not 01:13 meet the standard the first time they 01:15 attempt it the next generation science 01:17 standards are more rigorous standard 01:19 than the previous standards the 01:22 Washington comprehensive assessment of 01:23 science is designed to measure these 01:25 more rigorous standards and tell parents 01:28 and teachers whether or not students are 01:30 on track to be college or career ready 01:32 in science because the Washington 01:35 comprehensive assessment of science is 01:37 measuring higher standards fewer 01:39 students are expected to reach this new 01:41 standard it does not mean that schools 01:44 and students are doing worse than they 01:45 were before it means we have a new 01:47 baseline together we can support 01:49 students to meet these more rigorous 01:52 learning standards and be college and 01:54 career-ready 01:54 [Music]
